From May 11–13, 2026, the Indonesia Coal and Energy Expo 2026 (ICEE 2026) was successfully held at the Jakarta International Expo. Covering an exhibition area of 20,000 square meters, the event attracted more than 150 leading domestic and international energy companies and welcomed approximately 15,000 attendances. At the opening ceremony of ICEE 2026, Tri Winarno, Director General of Coal at Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, delivered a keynote speech outlining the strategic role of coal in Indonesia's energy security, the challenges facing the industry, and the future direction of technological transformation and downstream development.

Tri Winarno emphasized that coal remains one of the key pillars of Indonesia's national energy security, with 60%–69% of the country's electricity generation still relying on coal. Indonesia possesses over 143 billion tonnes of coal reserves, while coal exports generate USD 20–30 billion in annual export value. In response to challenges such as commodity price volatility, rising mining costs, and global emission reduction requirements, Tri Winarno emphasized that technological transformation has become one of the most critical factors in enhancing the competitiveness of the coal mining industry. The adoption of digitalization, automation, artificial intelligence, and data monitoring systems presents significant opportunities to improve productivity, operational efficiency, and operational safety.

At the same time, the Indonesian government is actively promoting its coal downstream strategy, including the developmen of coal-to-dimethyl ether (DME)t technology to reduce dependence on imported liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). According to Tri Winarno, the energy transition does not mean an abrupt end to the use of coal, but rather managing coal in a smarter, more efficient, and more sustainable way.

As a leading industry exhibition covering Indonesia's entire coal industry chain, ICEE has through two successful editions, evolved into an important platform connecting Chinese energy companies with Southeast Asian opportunities and facilitating deeper engagement in Indonesia's local market.

The Indonesia Coal and Energy Expo 2027 will return to the Jakarta International Expo from May 26–28, 2027. The exhibition area will expand to 30,000 square meters, with over 600 exhibitors and is expected to attract more than 28,000 professional visitor. ICEE will continue serving as a professional platform for China–Indonesia energy policy dialogue, technology exchange, and project cooperation, promoting deeper collaboration in green mining, smart mining, value-added coal processing, and coal chemical industries, while jointly exploring new opportunities in the Southeast Asian energy market.
